How the Retirement Math Works

Your future balance. The calculator compounds your current savings plus every monthly contribution — including your employer match and any catch-up — at your expected return until your retirement age. That's the pot you'll live off.

What you need. Using the 4% rule, you need about 25× your annual spending from savings. Your income goal is inflated to your retirement year, Social Security is subtracted, and the remainder sets your target nest egg. Your funded percentage is simply what you'll have divided by what you need.

Will it last? The 4% rule assumes a ~30-year horizon. This tool goes further and draws your money down year by year — with growth and inflation — to tell you the age your savings actually run out, so a plan that looks "funded" but dies early gets flagged.

Key Terms at a Glance

Funded %Your projected balance ÷ the balance you need. 100% = on track.
Real dollarsYour future balance expressed in today's purchasing power, after inflation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money do I need to retire?

A widely used shortcut is the 4% rule: you need roughly 25 times your expected annual spending from savings. If you plan to spend $60,000 a year and Social Security covers $24,000 of it, you'd need about 4% withdrawals of $36,000 — a nest egg near $900,000. This calculator does that math for you and inflates it to your retirement year.

How is my projected balance calculated?

It compounds your current savings plus your monthly contributions (and your employer match) at your expected annual return, month by month, until your retirement age. That future value is what you'll have to live on.

What does "funded percentage" mean?

It's your projected balance divided by the balance you need. 100% means you're on track to meet your income goal; 80% means you're close but should adjust something; below that, the "what would close the gap" panel shows the levers that get you there.

Is the 4% rule still safe?

It's a rule of thumb from historical stock-and-bond returns, meant to make money last about 30 years. Some planners now use 3.5% to be safer, others 4.5% in strong markets. The calculator also runs a year-by-year depletion check so you can see whether your specific plan actually lasts.

How much should I contribute to my 401(k)?

At minimum, contribute enough to capture your full employer match — that's free money and the calculator flags it if you're leaving any on the table. Beyond that, Fidelity's common benchmark is saving about 15% of your income (yours plus employer) each year.

What is a catch-up contribution?

Once you turn 50, the IRS lets you put extra money into a 401(k) and IRA above the normal limit — $7,500 more for 401(k)s in 2025, with a larger "super catch-up" for ages 60–63. Toggle it on to see how much the extra saving moves your finish line.
