Your GI Bill Includes A Separate $1,000-A-Year Stipend Most Veterans Never Claim

Most Post-9/11 GI Bill users know about two things: tuition coverage and the monthly housing allowance. There's a third piece sitting in the same benefit that a lot of veterans never actually claim.

It's called the books and supplies stipend, and it pays up to $1,000 per academic year specifically to offset the cost of textbooks and course materials. It's separate from tuition and separate from your housing allowance. It gets paid out at the start of your benefit award period, and again at the start of each new academic year you're enrolled.

The VA just updated the broader 2026-27 rate table, effective August 1, and the increases went to the tuition side. Caps for private colleges and universities went from $29,921 to $30,908 for the year. Vocational flight training rose from $17,098 to $17,662. Correspondence school rose from $14,533 to $15,013. The books and supplies stipend itself stayed at its existing $1,000 cap, but that's exactly the part veterans tend to overlook entirely, increase or not.

Here's why it gets missed. Tuition is usually paid directly to the school, and housing shows up automatically as a monthly deposit, so both feel handled without you doing anything. The books stipend often isn't automatic in the same way depending on how your school processes it, and some veterans simply don't realize it's a distinct benefit at all, so they pay out of pocket for textbooks that were already covered.

If you're using Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits this fall, or you've transferred benefits to a dependent, this is worth checking directly with your school's veterans affairs office before you buy a single textbook out of pocket.

The bottom line is this: your GI Bill isn't just tuition and housing. There's a separate $1,000-a-year stipend sitting in the same benefit, and it's on you to make sure your school is actually applying it.
