You can be placed at university AND apply for KMTC at the same time.
Students who have already secured university placement through KUCCPS may still be eligible to apply for the KMTC September 2026 intake, provided they meet the admission requirements for their preferred programme.
Read that again. You can already be placed at a university — and still apply for KMTC. Simultaneously.
Why this feels contradictory:
Most students assume placement works like a lock — once KUCCPS places you somewhere, that's it, you're done, no other options. That's not entirely true.
KUCCPS has not expressly stated that an existing university placement automatically disqualifies a student from KMTC admission — meaning applicants can participate in different placement windows at the same time.
The confusion is real — even other students are asking:
"The ones who filed for course and campus change, can they still apply?" one applicant asked. "Can one apply and get KMTC vacancy if they had secured university?" another asked. "Please guide us on which transfer is allowed," a third wrote.
Here's the actual clarified picture:
KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome confirmed the placement process remains flexible for students who wish to pursue different programmes, as long as they meet the required cut-off points and admission criteria for that specific programme.
Three separate windows running at the same time right now:
✓ KMTC September 2026 applications — closes August 11 ✓ TVET applications — closed August 5 ✓ Inter-institutional transfers and course changes — closes August 14, open to 2023, 2024 and 2025 KCSE cohorts
What this actually means for you:
If you got placed at university but you'd genuinely rather pursue a KMTC programme — you are not stuck. You can apply for KMTC through the same portal, meeting KMTC's specific entry requirements, without needing to first formally reject your university placement.
But be strategic. If you get admitted to both, you'll need to choose one — you cannot register at both institutions simultaneously.
The system is more flexible than most students assume. The confusion isn't because the rules are hidden — it's because almost nobody explains this in plain language.
Were you placed at university but considering KMTC instead? Or the reverse? Drop your situation below — happy to point you toward the accurate KUCCPS answer for your case.
