Certificate vs Diploma — the real breakdown

Duration: Certificate courses take 2 years. Diploma courses take 3 years. Exception: Diploma in Community Health Nursing specifically runs 3½ years, not 3.

Upgrading from Certificate to Diploma: Upgrading takes 1.5 years full-time, or 2 years if you choose the distance learning option. Not a flat "2 years" — full-time is actually faster.

Entry requirements: Certificate — minimum mean grade of C-. Exception: Medical Engineering and Nutrition & Dietetics certificates specifically accept D+, with D+ in English/Kiswahili and D in Mathematics.

Diploma — minimum mean grade of C plain, with C in English/Kiswahili and Biology, and C- in Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics depending on the specific course.

Job level and registration: Certificate holders register at enrolled level (for example, Kenya Enrolled Community Health Nurse) and typically work in assistant or technical support roles.

Diploma holders register at full professional level with their relevant regulatory body — Nursing Council of Kenya, Clinical Officers Council, Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board, and others — qualifying for broader scope of practice, supervisory roles, and stronger eligibility for private sector and international opportunities.

Which KMTC courses can you upgrade from certificate to diploma: Nursing, Medical Engineering, Clinical Medicine, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Emergency Medical Technician, Health Records, Public Health, Nutrition & Dietetics, Orthopaedics and Trauma Medicine, Community Health, and Mortuary Science.

HELB has opened the loan application window specifically for KMTC Certificate and Diploma students, running from August 21 to September 30, 2026.

KMTC's own announcement said it plainly: "When you ask us, we listen. You asked us for a HELB loan. Now, we have some good news for you."

This is the first-ever structured HELB loan application window specifically for KMTC students — previously, KMTC students relied largely on the college's own revolving fund, without access to this kind of government financing.

How to apply: Visit www.hef.co.ke and register using a personal mobile number linked to your National ID.

The window is open for just over 5 weeks — apply early. KMTC has urged students to submit applications early rather than wait until the September 30 deadline, to avoid last-minute delays.
