Every KUCCPS application season, thousands of STEM students freeze at the same two options. Here's what almost nobody tells them before they choose.

Most Kenyan universities don't actually offer both.

Most Kenyan universities don't even have a separate Software Engineering degree. Strathmore University and Egerton University are among the few offering an undergraduate degree specifically in software engineering, though detailed curriculum information is scarce.

University of Nairobi has incorporated a lot of software engineering concepts directly into its Computer Science degree. Same lecture halls. Same core units. Different name on the certificate.

What actually separates them where both exist:

Computer science covers algorithms, theory and areas like AI and cybersecurity, with a strong emphasis on mathematics and analytics. Software engineering focuses on software development and project management, with a more hands-on approach to designing and maintaining systems.

Where you end up:

The most common job graduates get after either degree is Software Developer or Software Engineer. Product Manager, QA Analyst, and Technology Consultant are common paths from both sides.

When it comes to math and statistics requirements, Computer Science and Software Engineering are almost identical — both cover combinatorics, probability and statistics.

The honest verdict

If your university offers both as genuinely separate degrees — CS gives you more room to pivot into AI, cybersecurity or research later. SE gets you building real software faster, with less theory standing between you and the job.

If your university only offers CS — stop stressing over the SE vs CS decision. Focus on which specialization electives you take instead. That's where the real difference gets made.

Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Data Science, and AI remain Kenya's most marketable technology fields for 2026 regardless of which degree name is on your certificate.
