"ONLY MEDICINE, LAW, ENGINEERING & IT ARE WORTH DOING"

Every form four leaver hears the same four courses on repeat. Medicine. Law. Engineering. IT. Meanwhile the government just quietly opened an entire economic sector almost nobody is applying into.

MYTH: "Only Medicine, Law, Engineering and IT are worth studying."

REALITY: Kenya just launched its National Blue Economy Strategy — organized around nine national priorities including sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, and marine ecosystem management, driven directly by the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs. This is now a formal government economic pillar, not a niche interest.

Mount Kenya University opened Kenya's first private Maritime Academy in Malindi — offering diplomas and degrees in marine navigation, marine engineering, port management, and oceanography. Courses almost nobody applies for, because nobody markets them as prestigious.

Pwani University, JKUAT, and Technical University of Mombasa already offer degrees in Marine Biology and Oceanography, Marine Engineering, and Marine Resource Management. Minimal competition for slots. Government-backed sector growth pushing demand behind it for years to come.

Same Pattern in Data

Entry-level data analysts in Kenya earn Ksh 80,000–150,000 per month. Mid-level professionals earn Ksh 180,000–250,000. Senior roles hit Ksh 300,000–350,000 and above.

Despite this, there's still a genuine talent gap — many graduates have the technical skills but can't connect data analysis to business strategy. That gap is opportunity sitting untouched, not a warning sign to avoid the field.

Why This Myth Survives

Nobody in your family talks about marine engineering at the dinner table. Nobody's cousin works in aquaculture. The courses that get repeated are the ones people already know — not the ones with the least competition and the most government backing.

The Bottom Line

The four "safe" courses are safe because everyone applies to them — which makes them the most competitive, not the smartest choice for every student. Blue economy programmes and data-driven fields carry real government investment, real salary data, and real slots sitting underfilled.
