Americans now say they need $1.46 million saved to retire comfortably — a $200,000 jump from just last year, according to Northwestern Mutual's 2026 Planning & Progress Study.

The median American 401k balance is $44,115.

That's not a typo. That's the actual midpoint — half of all savers have less than that, half have more — reported in Vanguard's How America Saves 2026 report, based on nearly 5 million real accounts.

The gap between what people believe they need and what they actually have isn't a small shortfall you close with a few extra years of saving. It's a 33x difference.

Here's why the number everyone quotes — the "average" 401k balance of $167,970 — is misleading almost everyone who hears it. That average is dragged upward by a small group of high-balance savers with decades of consistent contributions and employer matches. Most people aren't anywhere near it. The median is the number that actually reflects a typical American's retirement account — and it's $44,115.

Run that through the standard 4% withdrawal rule and it produces about $147 a month in retirement income. Not $1,470. $147.

Nearly half of Americans surveyed — 46% — say they don't think they'll be financially prepared when retirement arrives. Almost as many, 48%, believe it's somewhat or very likely they'll outlive their savings entirely.

Here's the part that should change how you think about this: the gap isn't primarily about people being bad with money. It's about most people never running the actual numbers early enough to see the gap while there was still time to close it. A 35-year-old with $44,000 saved who starts contributing seriously today is in a completely different position than the same person finding this out at 55.

Where do you think you land — closer to $44,000 or closer to $1.46 million? Be honest.
