How Shift Pay Is Calculated

Gross with overtime. Regular hours pay your rate; overtime hours pay 1.5×. Add them for your weekly gross.

Then the taxes. We annualize your week, subtract the 2026 standard deduction, run the federal brackets, and remove FICA (6.2% Social Security up to the $184,500 wage base, plus 1.45% Medicare) and your state's estimated income tax.

Your take-home. Dividing back out gives your weekly net and your true net per hour — the number that actually matters when you're deciding whether to pick up the shift.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

Under federal law (FLSA), hours worked over 40 in a workweek must be paid at 1.5× your regular rate. A few states — notably California — also require overtime after 8 hours in a single day. This calculator applies the 1.5× premium to the overtime hours you enter.

How much take-home pay should I expect?

It annualizes your week, subtracts the 2026 standard deduction, runs the federal brackets, then removes FICA (7.65%) and your state's estimated income tax. At $24/hr for 45 hours in a no-tax state, most people keep roughly 85% of gross.

Why is my net per hour lower than my hourly rate?

Your posted rate is gross. Federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and (in most states) income tax come out before the money hits your account — so your real per-hour take-home is lower. The calculator shows that true per-hour number.

Does this include local or city taxes?

No. It uses a single estimated state rate and skips local/city taxes, credits, health benefits, 401(k), and year-to-date wage effects. Treat it as a solid estimate, not a pay stub.

How is this different from a paycheck calculator?

A paycheck calculator starts from an annual salary. This one is built around hourly shifts — you enter the hours you actually worked, including overtime, and see what that shift and week net you.

Which states have no income tax?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming have no state income tax on wages. Pick one of those to see your take-home without state withholding.
