The biggest lie in hourly work: 'overtime is taxed at 50%.

There are few feelings specific to hourly work like watching deductions eat your overtime.

You pick up the extra shifts. The gross shows time-and-a-half. Then the federal line jumps like you got a raise you never received, and the take-home bump is way smaller than the math in your head.

And then everyone shrugs and says "overtime is taxed higher."

It isn't. There is no overtime tax rate in the law. Your overtime dollars are taxed exactly like your regular dollars, at your real annual rate.

What's actually happening is withholding math. Payroll systems calculate each check as if you'll earn that amount every week for the rest of the year. One 50-hour week makes the formula act like you got promoted — it withholds at a higher bracket for that single check, even though your real annual income never moved.

So the "extra tax" on overtime is usually just an overpayment. You get it back when you file. On paper, it's a timing issue.

In a real household budget, it isn't. The whole point of the extra shift is this week's gas, this week's groceries, this week's bill. An overtime check that gets held back until April is an interest-free loan nobody asked you to give.

The refund doesn't fix the cash flow. It just apologizes in spring. Hourly workers, be honest: after withholding, does overtime still feel worth it — or has a check ever made you say "never again"?
