Refusing a "Light Duty" Offer Can Cost You Your Whole Workers' Comp Check — But Only If the Offer Is Real.

A lot of injured workers assume a "light duty" offer from their employer is optional. Just say no and keep collecting your check, right?

That's not how it works in most states.

If your employer's insurer makes a genuine light-duty offer that fits the restrictions your doctor put in writing, turning it down can lead the insurer to petition to suspend your wage-loss checks entirely. It's often called "voluntary withdrawal from the labor market," and the argument is simple: the insurer says your lost wages are now coming from your refusal, not your injury.

But the rules swing hard depending on where you live. States like Washington, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, New York, and Florida can cut your benefits off completely for refusing a valid offer. Wyoming only cuts your temporary disability by two-thirds. California generally doesn't touch your benefits for refusing light duty at all, at least not right away.

Here's the part employers count on you not knowing: not every "light duty" offer actually counts. It has to match your doctor's written restrictions exactly — same lifting limits, same hours, same physical demands. A job labeled "light duty" that still has you lifting more than your restriction allows isn't a valid offer, and refusing it shouldn't touch your benefits.

And even if you take the job, you're not automatically giving up your check. If the light-duty role pays less than what you made before the injury, most states still owe you partial disability to cover the gap, not zero.

The bottom line is this: whether refusing light duty costs you your benefits depends entirely on your state's law and whether the offer actually matches your medical restrictions on paper, not just its title.
